Tea Time @ DePastry Chef!

The gang from Buurps went on an eating spree at DePastry Chef, a humble Cafe situated at one of the many corner shop units at Bandar Sri Menjalara.

Don’t be fooled by the counter, besides selling cakes and pastry, the shop actually serves a wide range of affordable yet delicious delights.

When I first stepped into the shop, I thought it looked like a candy shop, with cute and colorful things hanging from the ceiling, definitely adds the appeal to girl.

Since this is going to be a series covering the café, in this first installment, we would like to gratify your palates with a tempting selection of cakes.

Marble Cheese Cake – I was converted today!

Every café and restaurant in town has some kind of signature cake to their name; somehow most of them choose Cheese Cake (it shows Malaysian are somewhat obsess with cheese cake). The most notable one and most mentioned is from Secret Recipe. But that is about to change!

Although the marble cheese cake looks ordinary at a glance, but do not be deceive! At closer look, the texture is solid with a touché of softness yet firm when you put a fork to it.

The first bite that converted me!

The most noticeably distinction is that the cheesy taste blends in nicely and it gives you that smoothness feeling on your tongue and just gently melts in your mouth. And holding true to their policy of freshness everyday, the cake taste like it was straight from the oven. At RM6.00 per slice, I would say this is definitely value for money for what you are getting out of it.

Oh! According to a wikipedia entry about cheese did you know that Cyclops was tasked to making and storing sheep’s and goats’ milk cheese. And here we are always thinking Cyclops is that mean and angry beast wielding a wooden club guarding some treasure cave from greedy men.

German Cheese Cake – Achtung!

The German cheese cake is a real teaser on sight with a subtle touch of ‘burn’ design, made possible with the blend of egg yoke and lemon to it. This cheese cake gives you a tremendous light texture feel and gives you the spongy feeling. With the lemonish taste, it will definitely increase your appetite. This German precision comes at RM6.50.

Cappuccino Cheese Cake – black beauty!

Elegant, stylish and mysterious! That more or less sums up our next choice. With its ultra sinful helping of rich coffee topping with coffee sponge base at the bottom, this is definitely one ‘wake-up” coffee to have in the morning taking you to a new level of caffeine addiction.

For those who enjoy their cake with a little touch of bitterness taste to it, should take on this black beauty. The cake sells for RM7.00 per slice.

I love it, it’s so rich in chocolate and cheese cream that I actually had to think twice whether to indulge in it.

Tiramisu – a couple’s favourite

The texture is made from a springy sponge cake base with a wicked concoction of rum, light touch of cheese and of course the key ingredient coffee, and a sprinkle of cocoa powder on top adds some mysterious taste to it.

Termed as the couple’s cake, it is one of the recommended cake for dating couples from the shop service staff and it is also known as the “I miss you” cake. And at RM9.00 per slice it is a worthwhile gift for your loved ones. Aishiteru!

Durian-durian – Pokey fruit in a safer form

You can’t get away from it; every decent Malaysian café has to include this in their armoury, if not they will be deemed unpatriotic and charged under the ISA and get locked up without trial.

The design of the cake comes with little soft vanilla toppings and chocolate sticks on top and surrounded by pieces of crunchy almond slices which makes the cake very appealing. According to the café, they use real durian mixed with cream to make this wonderful blend giving you an explosive taste of tantalizing durian in one bite. It is noticeably mild to the taste, but yet powerful enough to invoke the feeling of durian to it. And this certainly went down well with Lixiegirl as this was her pick of the day.

For those who finds the durian fruit offensive and overpowering but have been having sleepless nights and cold sweat trying to muster the strength and courage to try it, this will possibly end that nightmare.

And I promise you after eating the durian-durian, your breath won’t kill and @RM10.00, it is a bargain to buy a goodnight sleep and it is available all year round.

Feels like you’re actually eating durian.

Chocolate Brownie – Yes, very brown.

Tea Time @ DePastry Chef!

Oh guys, you missed out the Chocolate Brownie. Covered in thin and tasty chocolate, the Chocolate Brownie is probably the driest cake among the plethora of cakes massing on our feasting table.

The cake is also topped with whipped cream, some crushed nuts …… or was it something else? I don’t know. :P Then of course, there’s the white chocolate stabbed right on the whipped cream.

Not exactly the most appealing to those who prefer moisture in cakes but to those who love chocolate, do give it a try. And remember to have some water around just in case. :)

These are only some of the cakes we managed to try, and there are many other different varieties that looks good and certainly made us feel good as well.

If you are into cakes & bread, you should pop by to DePastry Chef for a taste of these specialties. We’ll be having a few more article to cover our munching-outing at the DePastry Chef so make sure come back here again, or subscribe to our RSS feed to get instant updates.

Sorry la. I was busy taking photos and gorging the rest of the dishes that bogieman and lexiegirl (Don’t they sound like some super-heroes?) seem to be ignoring. Not exactly a cake fan either.

Anyway, I blame those 2 for the additional padding I put on that day.
