The ActiFry Snacking is part of Tefal’s ActiFry family of air fryer products.
As the product name suggests – it’s for “snacks” but we’ll show you that it can do more than just snacks.
Unlike the rest of the ActiFry rpoducts, the ActiFry snacking comes with a snack grill. We’ll show you the snacking grill in a bit.
Here’s the ActiFry Snacking – that’s all you need to get your frying works moving. As you can see from the image, the lid is closed and there’s a transparent steam-free viewing window for progress monitor. The lid is also detachable for maintenance purpose. The appliance does not operate with the lid open.
According to Tefal, ActiFry has a patented hot air system and stirring paddle which together ensure excellent all over cooking results with no need to shake or stir during cooking – that’s hands-free cooking, without having to constantly attend to it.
Operating the ActiFry Snacking is a no-brainer. At the front there’s only 2 buttons, you have to press both buttons in order to release the lid.
At the top is the panel that comes with 2 buttons and an LCD. The button on the left is to ON / OFF button, of which unlike a Microwave, the ON button here gets the frying started. The timer button increase the count down timer that’s displayed on the LCD screen.
As for internals of the ActiFry Snacking, it comes in 2 variations. The first one uses the removable mixing paddle. The mixing paddle is great to use with products like french fries or nuggets.
The mixing paddle is removable not just for washing purpose but it’s also for you to replace it with the snack grill. What the snack grill does is that it allows you to place items that are fragile, like say Chinese Spring Rolls (aka popiah) or fish fillets.
Once you completed your work, sliding the green switch in front allows you to remove the pan from the ActiFry.
Removal of the pan will unveil the spinning mechanism and filter, this also grants you access to clean them.
The ActiFry Snacking comes with a 14ml measuring spoon, part of their “One spoon of oil is enough!” motto.
For our ActiFry Snacking user experience, our test subject was the Fish & Chip pack from Pacific West.
We’ll let the video do the talking.
The outcome was great! We left the fryer on it’s own and didn’t even took a second glance, to only remove the contents from the fryer once the time is up. It’s lovely that even the snack grill is being rotate through the process to get it heated evenly.
Looks great, right?
As an unmanned appliance for frying the Tefal ActiFry Snacking worked great, I’m so happy with the turn out of the chips (french fries) and the fish fillet that I even tried it with some lamb patty from BIG, it fried the patty almost as good as how I would have grilled it personally.
Normally I would have taken around 8 minutes to prepare 2 patties, and that’s with my constant supervision over how the patties are grilled on both sides to ensure it’s cooked the way I wanted it to be. With the Tefal ActiFry Snacking it took almost twice the duration but I need not babysit, it doesn’t fill the home with tantalizing aroma of lamb and it doesn’t dirty the kitchen.
I think that’s a fairly reasonable trade-off.
The Tefal ActiFry Snacking isn’t perfect though, I think to me the greatest issue is the timer. If you’re familiar with microwaves and ovens, a timer means that the appliance will STOP once the time is up. An oven will stop channeling heat to the heating rods while a microwave would cease operation but this is NOT the case with the Tefal ActiFry Snacking.
The timer is just as the name implies – a timer. It will beep like an alarm clock once it’s down but the frying process continues.
To make it worse, the alarm isn’t loud. Did you hear the beep in the video? You didn’t, did you? I bet you didn’t, the alarm went off at 1:33 on the video and it sounded even after I already turned off the fryer. Put it simple, the timer was not only useless as it doesn’t stop the fryer, the alarm isn’t loud enough to signal anyone around. You’re better off setting the timer on your phone or watch.
Another short-coming of the ActiFry Snacking is the short power cable, no pun intended. Being an appliance that hogs quite some real-estate, I think it’ll be great to have a longer power cable to facilitate placement.
Keep in mind that the ActiFry takes quite a long time to get items cooked (via air frying) so if it takes 20 minutes for the chips and another 20 minutes for the fish fillet, the chips would’ve been quite soggy by the time the fish fillet is ready. Even when I was preparing my burger, I used the ActiFry only for the patties while the burger buns were taken care of by my trusty oven.
Tefal ActiFry Snacking appliance retails at RM 999 and comes with 2 years warranty, the build quality is good but more importantly it gets the job done. Just make sure you have a good quality power socket that is able to sustain 1400w power draw for the cooking duration.
The beauty of the Tefal ActiFry Snacking is that it helps you get the job done without requiring your constant attention, and it does so without causing a mess to your kitchen or whichever place you usually do your cooking. On the down side, it has limited space and there so you can forget about large-quantity preparation. 🙂
I wouldn’t consider the long-duration frying a negative point as that’s how it works, long duration low or medium heat is the key to getting items cooked down to the core.
