It’s hard to come by good onigiri but I’m glad to come across Niko Niko Onigiri.
The brand isn’t new, I’ve seen them for years but never thought to give them a try until recently.
The price is reasonable, at RM 3.80 per piece. I ordered 2 raw salmon onigiri and added cheese for the second one.
What I like is that the onigiri is freshly prepared, meaning it is prepared upon order.
Here’s what it looks like after fiddling around with the wrapper.
Not bad, one chunk of raw salmon shoved right inside the onigiri. Overall the taste is good, the texture of the Japanese rice and smell of raw salmon blends very well.
As for the one with cheese, it’s rather disappointing that it’s the creamy form of cheese like the ones on KFC’s Cheezy Wedges. I was expecting actual cheese instead, perhaps a mix of tiny cheddar cuts or have some melted mozarella in the mix but this wasn’t it.
Overall it’s still a satisfying experience. They have many stalls across Klang Valley, just type “niko niko onigiri” on Facebook and you’ll see a whole list of them.
