Din Tai Fung is famous world wide and we savored the offerings from their local outlet and left rather disappointed, so we decided to find out just how good is this Din Tai Fung back at their place of origin!
It’s not my first visit to Taiwan, and I must say the horrid experience with the local outlet was probably the main factor on why it didn’t even struck my fancy to visit this place until recently. And so I did, lo and behold it is as what you saw in the image above at their main outlet that’s located at Xinyi Road.
That’s dinner traffic mind you! Take a number and wait for your turn to be seated – that’s how crowded it is. The main outlet is an old building and it’s neither handicap nor old people friendly as some dining rooms require one to walk up many flights of stairs.
The dining area varies, from simple 2 – 4 seater tables to rooms that are spacious enough to host a crowd.
Our meal costs less than 1000NT in total, with the main star of the course being their Xiao Long Bao. I never liked Xiao Long Bao, I don’t recall any good ones in Malaysia but I’m totally floored by the ones I had here at Din Tai Fung. Perhaps I’ll dedicate an article on how to eat XLB one day but for now, you’ll just have to take my word on how great it tastes with just by dipping it into a bit of sauce.
We ordered fried rice too, nicely done though it doesn’t taste as rich as Yeung Chow fried rice served at other restaurants, the amount of salty and sweet taste is as if toned down.
Lastly, we always look to complete our meal with some greens and behold this came on a small plate but it’s tall like a mountain.
